Ayr United have called in police to investigate after the club said a number of its players and staff had been subjected to a campaign of "unsolicited messages" which had become "criminal in nature."Somerset chiefs tonight issued a statement confirming the authorities had been called in and an inquiry was under way.

It follows messages which they say have been communicated to a number of individuals over "a significant period of time."United's club statement reads: "Ayr United can confirm its players and staff have been subjected to unsolicited messages from unknown numbers for a significant period of time.

These persons are looking to gain access to team-wide communication platforms and personal details of colleagues."Whilst this has been an ongoing annoyance to those involved, these messages have recently become criminal in nature and the matter has now been reported to the police.

Ayr United condemns these individuals/groups in the strongest possible terms. The Police will have our fullest support with their ongoing enquiries." Read next: Don't miss the latest Ayrshire headlines – sign up to our free daily newsletter
