The fantasy adventure set on the world of Pandora recently earned four Oscar nominations, including one for Best Picture ahead of its weekend win, in which it collected $15.7 million.
The James Cameron–directed sequel has pushed past Star Wars: The Last Jedi to become the eleventh highest grossing film domestically of all time, according to Deadline.
Avatar 2 is also within striking distance of the number 10 film The Avengers, which it is expected to pass by the middle of the week.
