Arsenal legend Ian Wright has recalled having to help former England boss Glenn Hoddle tidy up his hotel room after he informed Paul Gascoigne that he had not made the squad for the 1998 World Cup.
Hoddle famously omitted Gascoigne from the 22 man squad due to concerns over his fitness levels in what was a major shock at the time. 'Gazza' had been part of England's initial World Cup training camp in Spain, prior to the final squad being announced, and failed to convince Hoddle of his fitness.
Every member of the squad spoke to Hoddle in his hotel room to be individually told whether or not they had made the cut but Gascoigne heard a rumour that he was set to miss out.
