An army veteran hit by PTSD has died at 32 – haunted by some of the bloodiest fighting faced by forces in Afghanistan. Friends believe that Brett Savage took his own life.
The former Irish Ranger had struggled with his mental health since he was 18, when he and comrades were overrun by 500 Taliban warriors during the 52-day siege of Musa Qala.
Brett, who was in a BBC documentary on PTSD in April, said he could never forget seeing pals killed and injured. He told how during the 2006 siege, he was running low on bullets and prepared to shoot as many attackers as he could – while saving a bullet for himself. “It was like the hardest thing, mentally,” he said.
