AP Says Trump White House Blocked Reporter From Event Over News Org’s Policy to Not Adopt ‘Gulf of America’ Name

Todd Spangler NY Digital Editor The Associated Press said one of its reporters was barred from entry to a White House event because of the news organization’s decision to not refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” as decreed by President Trump.

Both Apple Maps and Google Maps now call the body of water the “Gulf of America” following Trump’s Jan. 20 executive order on the name change.

The Associated Press previously said it would continue to refer to it as the Gulf of Mexico, which has been known by that name for more than 400 years.

On Tuesday, AP executive editor Julie Pace said the news org was informed by the White House that if AP “did not align its editorial standards with President Donald Trump’s executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, AP would be barred from accessing an event in the Oval Office.” On Tuesday afternoon, an AP reporter was blocked from attending an executive order signing at the White House, according to Pace.
