Angela Rayner has blasted a Tory levelling up promise as a 'sham and a scam'. The Ashton-under-Lyne MP argued regional inequalities have 'got worse' under the Conservatives, slamming them for having a a "lack of ambition and aspiration and power" behind their promises.
Commenting as she prepares to launch the Labour Party's local election campaign alongside Keir Starmer in the West Midlands, the deputy-leader said said Rishi Sunak had failed to boost left behind areas left with hollowed out public services and transport, in an interview with The Mirror. I think they identified a problem, which is absolutely correct, the regional inequalities, which we've seen actually get worse under the Conservatives." Instead she said the scheme had left councils being forced to fork out millions in bids to compete for "pots of money".
A Labour analysis also claims the gap in average earnings between London and other parts of the country has grown in every region apart from the South West since 2010.
