Andy Burnham reacts to Manchester’s high knife carrying crime rates

Andy Burnham said he was ‘proud’ of the work being done to tackle knife crime in Greater Manchester. The Mayor of Greater Manchester was speaking after the M.E.N.

revealed that our region has some of the highest rates of blade possession offences in the country. In the last three years, the equivalent of one in every 275 people living in Manchester was caught carrying a blade, Home Office statistics show.

That put the city in sixth place in the country in terms of highest knife carrying offences per population - with a rate of 36 crimes for every 10,000 people living there.

Birmingham had the highest rate of blade possession offences in that period - with 52 crimes per 10,000 population. Salford was ninth in the country - with 32 crimes for every 10,000 people living there - the equivalent one in every 311 people being caught with a blade.
