Amy Schumer is still processing Will Smith’s infamous slap of Chris Rock during the Oscars, but is turning to humour to move forward.
Returning to the stage as a stand-up on April 2, Schumer was ready with some jokes and commentary about the Academy Awards as well as the jokes she wasn’t allowed to say during the ceremony. “I don’t even know what to say about the Oscars,” Schumer said during her Las Vegas gig, as reported by Vanity Fair. “Like, I really don’t know what to say.
I have no jokes about it. All I can say is that I don’t know if you saw this, but Will Smith slapped Chris Rock. Did you read that in your newsfeed?” Calling Smith “Ali” in reference to his 2001 role as boxer Muhammad Ali, the “Life & Beth” star recounted the slap calling it “sad” and a “f***ing bummer”. “I was kind of feeling myself… and then all of a sudden Ali was making his way up.
And it was just a fucking bummer,” she told the crowd. “All I can say is that it was really sad, and I think it says so much about toxic masculinity.
