Amazon pulls 'irresponsible' balcony BBQs from sale after devastating fires

Online giant Amazon has axed “balcony barbecues” from its site amid fears they are a fire risk. The compact grills designed to hook over balcony railings in high rise blocks, have been linked to hundreds of blazes and have been slammed as “a staggeringly irresponsible idea" by a leading fire brigade boss.

They have become popular with those living in flats with little outdoor space as the portable grills are large enough to cook several sausages or kebabs in one go.

But figures from the London Fire Brigade (LFB) show it dealt with 600 balcony fires in the last three years, including one at a block of flats in Deptford, south east London, in May caused by a barbecue being dumped in a plastic bag on the balcony.
