Altrincham to host start of Greater Manchester stage of Tour of Britain

This September, British Cycling’s premier road cycling event will set off from Greater Manchester. The Tour of Britain will begin in the market town of Altrincham as the borough of Trafford hosts the start of the Greater Manchester stage on Sunday, September 3.

It will be the first time the city has hosted the race’s Grand Départ, for the first time since 2004, with Altrincham set to host the start of the prestigious opening stage that will see over 100 of the world’s top riders setting off on the 19th edition of the modern Tour of Britain. Councillor Tom Ross, Leader of Trafford Council, said: “Trafford is renowned for hosting world class sport so it is a pleasure and honour to have the Grand Départ here in Altrincham.

Last time, thousands of people came to cheer on the cyclists and enjoy the delights of our award-winning market town and I’m confident even more people will want to come and experience the opening of this illustrious event.” The stage will start from Market Street, close to Altrincham Market, the popular food and drink spot which has been at the heart of the town’s re-invention as ‘the’ modern market town.

Mandy White, manager of Altrincham Business Improvement District, said: “We’re absolutely delighted that the Tour of Britain is returning to Altrincham for the Grand Depart on Sunday 3 September.
