Alexandria business aims to spread joy amid roadworks chaos with 'yarn bombing'

Nightmare roadworks are causing misery in Alexandria but one local business is determined to spread some positivity – by decorating traffic cones in YARN.

The owners of Susie’s Wool Shop have been bringing brightening up Gilmour Street with ‘yarn bombing’.The knitting and crocheting craze sees crafters adorn everyday items, including postboxes, bollards, and whatever else comes their way, with colourful cosies.Mum and daughter team Jennifer and Susie, as well as Susie’s mother Susan Crawford, have been hard at work making woolly wares for traffic cones and a nearby phone box.Even a road sign has been given a makeover with knitted bunting.Jennifer said it’s brought some much needed cheer to the town following weeks of roadworks during the renovation of Smollett Fountain, which have caused chaos.She said: “I don’t know where the origins of yarn bombing came from but it’s to show people that places can be cheered up and made more colourful with knitting and crochet.“We saw it being done in other areas and decided to do here to spread a bit of positivity.“People have decorated post boxes with yarn but we don’t have one of those near us so we’ve decorated the phone box instead with a woolly highland cow.“The traffic cones have been outside the shop for so long they’re like a member of the family.“All of our family members get jumpers made so we thought we might as well make jumpers for them too!”Jennifer told how their work has raised plenty of smiles, with passersby popping into the shop to say thanks.Even workers have stopped by to show their appreciation.Jennifer added: “We’ve had a fabulous reaction from people walking by and saying thanks very much for putting it there.“We’ve even had some of the workers come in and say
