And the most expensive was Waitrose - with a sample basket at a whopping 55 per cent more costly than Aldi's in the annual survey by trade magazine The Grocer.
With such a huge price discrepancy, it does rather beg the question that at twice the price of Aldi, can Waitrose products really be twice as good?
There was only one way to find out. Reporter Dianne Bourne headed to buy a host of products from both stores to see how they compared on quality, taste and price - matching like-for-like in terms of value ranges and the store's more premium products.
