Neil Francis Lennon (born 25 June 1971) is a Northern Irish football coach and former player who is the manager of Scottish Premiership club Celtic. During his playing career he represented English clubs Manchester City, Crewe Alexandra and Leicester City.
Lennon moved to Scottish club Celtic in 2000, where he made over 200 appearances and was appointed captain in 2005. Before retiring as a player, he returned to England and played for Nottingham Forest and Wycombe Wanderers. Lennon made 40 appearances for Northern Ireland in nine years, scoring two goals. Lennon was appointed manager of Celtic in March 2010, initially in a caretaker capacity after the departure of Tony Mowbray.
Alan Thompson has lifted the lid on the bombshell call from Neil Lennon that saw him bulleted as Celtic coach and sent him spiralling into a life of depression and alcohol.
The former Hoops hero had returned to Parkhead as a coach under Lennon and helped him restore them to Scottish champions. But Thompson was sacked by the club due to off-field issues and it was Lennon who was ordered to make the call that left the Geordie stunned and ended their friendship.
The 47-year-old revealed details of his bitter departure in his new autobiography and told the Scottish Sun : “The day I was fired by the club, it came out of the blue. “I’d been to the Derby at Epsom with my wife Jo, ex-player Steve Stone and his wife Judith who were close friends.“
