Carolyn Giardina Responding to a lingering question in the industry, participants in Advanced HDR by Technicolor — the brand behind a collection of HDR technologies aimed at allowing broadcasters and content providers to deliver quality imagery across a variety of display devices and network environments — tell Variety that it was not impacted by Technicolor’s recent shut down.
Initial development of Advanced HDR by Technicolor was a project from InterDigital, Philips and Technicolor. But in recent years, Technicolor sold certain video IP asserts to InterDigital, and the development progressed independently of Technicolor.
For continuity, the project continued to use the name Technicolor through a brand licensing agreement. Facing “severe financial challenges,” Technicolor began to close it global operations and declare bankruptcy on Feb.
24. The iconic company’s brands at the time of its closure were VFX giant MPC, commercial VFX company The Mill, Mikros Animation and Technicolor Gaming (the gaming unit was sold to TransPerfect following the bankruptcy).
