Carolyn Giardina The Academy Software Foundation has launched its latest project, development of Samsung‘s OpenAPV codec, led by new Premier member Samsung.
The Foundation was launched by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Linux Foundation in 2018 to provide an umbrella for developing open source software for the entertainment industry.
OpenAPV responds to improvements in smartphone camera performance by focusing on professional-grade video recording and editing capabilities for these devices.
Samsung unveiled the APV codec in 2023, which it claims can provide “perceptually lossless” video quality while consuming 20% less storage compared to existing formats. “We believe in the power of collaboration, and we’ve seen the Academy Software Foundation’s great achievements in making open source software more accessible for the entire content creation industry,” said Samsung Research’s Kwang Pyo Choi in a released statement. “We are excited to contribute to the Foundation and look forward to working with the other members to better support the professional content creators who use your products.” Added the Foundation’s exec director David Morin, “Samsung’s longstanding commitment to open source has been a model for companies in many industries. … We are very excited that Samsung Electronics has joined the Foundation and is contributing the APV source code to create OpenAPV.
