Liam James Payne (born 29 August 1993) is an English singer and songwriter.
He rose to fame as a member of the boy band One Direction.
Payne made his debut as a singer when he auditioned for the British television series The X Factor in 2008. After being eliminated as a solo performer, he auditioned again in 2010 and was put into a group with four other contestants to form One Direction
When teenagers Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Niall Horan were thrown together on The X Factor to form One Direction in 2010, they were all boyish banter and puppy dog enthusiasm.
Their interviews were packed full of ladish tactility - and the fans loved it - for despite having started out as strangers, it seemed the fivesome were the perfect fit.
But things turned sour when Zayn - who turned 28 yesterday - famously quit in 2015 explaining that he wanted to be a “normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight” after five years on the road.
His departure is said to have come as a huge shock to the group, with Liam branding it the 'worst time' for the band but vowing:
