The heartbroken parents of a young actress say she died despite having twice went to a doctor's surgery but not seen by a GP.Emily Chesterton, 30, died on October 31 last year after suffering a cardiac arrest when a fatal blood clot was mistaken for long covid and anxiety.She had visited her doctor's surgery on two occasions complaining of calf pain and shortness of breath, believing both times she had seen a GP.However, she was seen by a physician associate, who only had basic-level medical training and wasn't a qualified doctor.Her calf pain was misdiagnosed as a sprain, and her shortness of breath was mistaken for long covid and anxiety, for which she was prescribed medication to slow her heart.She died after suffering a pulmonary embolism, reports the MEN.
Emily, who was originally from Boothstown in Salford, had moved to London to pursue her career, alongside her boyfriend, just before the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
An inquest at St Pancras Coroner's Court in March this year concluded that the physician associate should have sent Emily to a hospital A&E, and that if she had been treated, she likely would have survived.
Her parents Marion and Brendan Chesterton are now calling for closer monitoring of physician associates within GP practices, and for it to be mandatory for them to make patients aware they are not seeing a qualified doctor.They said: "We feel extremely let down by the care provided by the GP practice.
