A violent farm worker left his girlfriend a 'shell of her former self' after taking control of her entire life and subjecting her to years of terrifying abuse.

Joshua Boyd, 23, controlled who his 18-year-old victim went out with, what pictures she could put on Instagram and where she should go on holiday, Chester Crown Court heard.

Boyd would also beat her up in fits of paranoid jealousy. On one occasion Boyd of Lullingstone Crescent, Ingleby Barwick, Stockton-On-Tees, threw knives at the woman, and on another punched her so hard in the side that she fell to the floor and had difficulty breathing.

He then kicked her in the same area while she lay on the floor in pain leaving her with broken ribs. During one exchange he told her: ''I’ll smash everything up including your face U rat.
