A dad was told he had made a ‘calamitous decision’ by agreeing to smuggle drugs into the country. Michael Platt, 42, has been jailed for two years after being caught out when he arrived at Manchester Airport.
Platt, a father-of-three, had been offered £10,000 as well as a holiday to Phuket in Thailand, if he tried to smuggle cannabis through customs on his way home.
But Border Force spotted him and discovered his suitcase contained almost £100,000 of the class B drug. His barrister said Platt had experienced hard times, losing his job and home. He was stopped by Border Force officers after they noticed him carrying a large suitcase. Platt told the officers that he had been away ‘doing family stuff’, and that his luggage contained ‘mainly clothes’.
