Yara Shahidi exudes confidence discussing taking charge of career and creating activism through art

Yara Shahidi has been working on making her own way and becoming a major force for change in Hollywood. The actress, 23, who recently showcased her fashion chops while promoting season five of her hit sitcom Grown-ish in New York is talking about her upcoming projects now that both she and her character Zoey Johnson have graduated from college.

The Harvard grad talked about some of her hopes and dreams in the latest cover story in NET-A-PORTER’s digital title, Porter.

Yara will appear next as Tinker Bell in Peter Pan & Wendy on Disney+, fulfilling a long held dream of starring in a fairy tale.'I've always wanted to get into the world of fantasy,'  she explained. 'As an actor, it is a fun challenge to find a way to make something still feel real when nothing around you is real.' Taking charge: Yara Shahidi, 23,  has been working on making her own way and becoming a major force for change in HollywoodTo make the iconic character her own, the BET Award winner decided to turn to another icon, Josephine Baker, whom she described as making 'really exaggerated' but 'effortless' movements, for inspiration. 'I mean, who knows when people see it whether they're gonna [notice] all these small references,' the Fearless voice actress admitted. 'But for me, as an actor, it was helpful and exciting to be able to build all these references [for] Tinker Bell.' Wanting to have more input on the kinds of projects she works on, Yara created her own company, 7th Sun Productions, with her mother Keri.
