XL Bully rescuer slammed after dog he transported to Scotland is shot dead

An XL Bully rescuer who has transported scores of the banned dogs to Scotland has come under fire after one of the animals was shot dead.Sammy Wilkinson told the Record last month how he was driving thousands of miles around the clock to get soon-to-be outlawed pets to safety ahead of a ban on the breed in England.He had been praised by animal lovers - who pledged almost £17,000 to a fundraiser aimed at keeping him on the road.But one of the dogs which Wilkinson helped bring to Scotland was gunned down by armed police in East Kilbride at the weekend - sparking a barrage of criticism from rescuers.Yesterday his lawyer told the Record he was not at fault over the incident and a complaint is set to be lodged with police - claiming video evidence shows the animal was under control when it was shot.One source, who runs a rescue centre, said: “All of us are advocating for rescue dogs - but you’ve had the likes of Sammy Wilkinson who have put themselves up as the heroes of XL Bullies when in fact they’re not on any level.“Rescues have been absolutely horrified by this.

It isn’t rescue by any means and it was only a matter of time before this happened.“This has done great harm to all of us saying breed specific legislation doesn’t work.
