Wout Weghorst says Manchester United gave the reaction they had aimed to produce against Real Betis following the 7-0 drubbing by Liverpool last weekend.

A classy 4-1 win over the Spaniards on Thursday night in the Europa League helped heal some of the wounds inflicted by the huge defeat at Anfield, with Weghorst scoring his long-awaited first Old Trafford goal.

The Dutchman fired in his first goal in 12 matches after a Scott McTominay shot was parried into his path on 82 minutes to cap a successful night for Erik ten Hag’s side.

Speaking about the goal afterwards, the attacker admitted his ecstatic reaction showed how much the strike meant to him. "But yeah, [it was a] great feeling and of course, I had to wait a long time for it - too long. [I'm] really happy and at the end I got my goal, so that was a great feeling with the stadium in front of the Stretford End, it was special." Weghorst had a first-half goal ruled out for offside but when his hard work was rewarded with the goal, his United teammates showed their appreciation for the striker in their celebration.
