Women are being short-changed by the UK pensions system

To coincide with the first International Women’s Day of the 2020s this weekend, a new study has found that the pension system is still short-changing women.

Research from Now Pensions and the Pensions Policy Institute reveals that women’s annual private pension income is 55 per cent lower than that of men, despite record levels of women in employment (72 per cent).

The average annual private pension income for men aged 65 and over is £8,620, compared to £3,920 for their female counterparts.

This represents a gap of £4,700, despite a record number of women being in employment - 72.4 per cent, the highest since records began.Women working full-time still earn almost £6,000 less than men per year, with an average annual income of £24,150,
