A Greater Manchester Police officer has been sacked after he hit a man over the head with his baton during a 'disturbance' on Deansgate Locks.Police constable Philip Ellis was found to have used 'excessive force' and breached standards of professional behaviour, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said.The incident in October 2016 left a 23-year-old man needing hospital treatment for his injuries.The IOPC launched an investigation that concluded in March 2017 and evidence was handed to GMP and the Crown Prosecution Service.Prosecutors decided the evidence did not support a criminal prosecution, but in February 2018, police bosses agreed that Pc Ellis had a case to answer for gross misconduct.A misconduct hearing was held this
