Woman killed after ringing for help when she broke down on motorway

A woman was killed after a BMW ploughed into the back of her car when she broke down on a motorway. Amy Austin, 28, died in hospital two days after the crash on the M5 in Devon.

An inquest at Exeter Coroner's Court yesterday (Wednesday) heard harrowing witness accounts of the moment Amy's black Vauxhall Corsa came to a halt in the middle of the motorway, near Junction 31, on December 12, 2021.

Amy's car reportedly broke down in the third lane while heading towards the A30 for Okehampton at 9.15pm. Despite activating her hazard lights, they reportedly appeared dim. The mother driving the BMW with her sleeping son onboard stayed at the scene and was described in court as 'remorseful and tearful'.
