Why did the May Bank Holiday change for 2020? Reason it's a Friday this year

The first May Bank Holiday usually takes place on the first Monday of the month. But in 2020, it has been pushed back four days and will take place on Friday 8 May instead.

It has been moved to coincide with VE Day, as 2020 is the 75th anniversary of the end of World War Two in Europe. Bank Holiday Friday was supposed to be the start of a weekend of celebrations and commemorations, but sadly many events have been cancelled due to the coronavirus crisis.

On 8 May 1945, the Allied Forces accepted the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany and the war in Europe came to an end. Adolf Hitler had committed suicide a week earlier, on 30 April, leaving his successor Karl Donitz to surrender to the Allies.
