Across England, more cases of whooping cough have been confirmed in the first month of 2024 than over the 10 months of last year and Greater Manchester is no exception.
Whooping cough, sometimes known as the 100-day cough', is a bacterial infection of the lungs and breathing tubes. It spreads very easily and can sometimes cause serious problems.
New figures from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) show there were 553 lab-confirmed cases in England this January. By the end of January last year, there had been just nine confirmed cases, and 505 by the end of October, fewer than in the first month of 2024.
While the UKHSA has not released data showing the locations where outbreaks have been confirmed, it is possible to map notifications of whooping cough.
