The tragic murder of Rhys Jones and the despicable cover up attempt by his killer sent shockwaves throughout the UK. Sean Mercer and his gang, the Croxteth Crew, were involved in a bitter row with the Strand Gang over territory in Liverpool.
When he heard members of the Strand Gang had strayed on to his “patch”, he rode his BMX bike to the Fir Tree pub armed with a World War I-era Smith & Wesson revolver.
Mercer fired three fateful shots - with the second tragically hitting schoolboy Rhys as he returned from football practice in August 2007.
The young Everton fan, who died at the scene in the arms of his mother, had unwittingly walked into a gang fight and was shot by a stray bullet.
