'Where is the justice?' Scots rape survivor's plea as attacker makes bid for freedom

A sex attack survivor and campaigner has asked "where is the justice?" after being told that her rapist ex-boyfriend will be bidding for his freedom in an upcoming parole hearing just two years after he was jailed.Ellie Wilson, who has waived her right to anonymity, has accused Scotland's justice system of not being "compassionate" or "progressive" towards victims as she hit out at the news of Daniel McFarlane's potential release, not even halfway through his sentence.

Former medical student McFarlane was convicted of raping Ellie twice between December 2017 and February 2018, as well as attempting to defeat the ends of justice following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow.

The 26-year-old, from Inverness, was sentenced to five years in jail in July 2022. Ellie, 26, has since campaigned for reform of the justice system, including bravely taking on her rapist's lawyer Lorenzo Alonzi in a formal complaint that was upheld by the Scottish Legal Complaints Commission, as well as helping successfully lobby the Scottish Government to give survivors of rape and sexual assault free access to court transcripts.Following the news of the upcoming Parole Board hearing, Ellie explained that she had received a letter via the Victim Notification Scheme asking for her representation by the end of August for when the board considers the case.She said: "I came back from holiday to this [letter] - my rapist has only been in prison for just over two years, and I’m already having to start thinking about parole proceedings.
