Celtic and Rangers clashed for the 438th time on Saturday at Parkhead and there’s never been any love lost between the fierce rivals - despite their maiden meeting being a “FRIENDLY”.
After ending 2023 with one of the world’s most famous football fixtures, Record Sport recalls the first ever time they locked horns 135 years ago.
And the 60,000 home fans on Saturday witnessed a repeat of that day in May 1888 as the newly-formed Hoops ran out 5-2 winners That match was played at the old Celtic Park, just a Joe Hart goal kick from where the latest instalment of the rivalry took place, which was their home for the first four years of the club’s existence.
But while Celtic claimed that first victory - something of a surprise given it was their first official match - Rangers have gained the upper hand in the years since with 169 wins and Philippe Clement failed to add another to that tally when the Belgian experienced it for the first time.
