Mother's Day, Daylight Savings, the first day of spring - March is officially here to bring an end to a long, dark and stormy winter.

The weather of winter 2022 was one for the books kicking off with storms Arwen and Barra, then the back-to-back storms Dudley, Eunice and Franklin in February. But now Scots are enjoying an extra sunny weekend which is just a harbinger of longer days to come. You might have already noticed the days - and sunlight - stretching longer in the evening and tomorrow, March 6, is the first day the sunset crosses 6pm in Scotland. We're in the home stretch to spring as the clocks are due to jump forward in a matter of weeks. Now that Pancake Day is done and dusted, spring is around the corner as the first blooms of 2022 pop up and bundles of daffodils and tulips are sold in the shops.

The official first day of spring is Sunday, March 20 - just days after St Patrick's Day (March 17). A week after that, Mother's Day and Daylight Savings fall on the same day - Sunday, March 27.

Also known as Mothering Sunday, the holiday in the UK moves to different days each year due to the fact it falls on the fourth Sunday after Lent.Unlike Father's Day, Mother's Day falls on a different day in the UK than in the US where it's the second Sunday in May.Remember not to get caught off notice when the clocks spring forward later in the month. The main reason behind Daylight Savings is to make use of extra sunlight hours as the days grow longer. The days will stretch out until the summer solstice on June 21, the longest day of the year.
