What happens if you own a banned dog breed in the UK and can it be taken away?

The American XL bully dog will be banned by the end of the year following a series of attacks, it has been announced.Prime Minister Rishi Sunak confirmed American bully XL dogs will be banned after the work is done to define the breed.

He says they will be banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act by the end of 2023 after there is a clear definition of the breed.While the UK doesn't currently recognise the American bully XL as a specific breed, the US does where they are said to have originated.

They are a result of American pit bull terriers and American Staffordshire terriers being crossed alongside other breeds to create an even more muscular dog.

Dog attacks have risen by more than a third over the past five years, and of the 10 fatal dog attacks in the UK last year, more than half of them have involved a newly popular breed known as the American XL Bully, The Mirror reports.
