The first day of school is a big moment for any child, but for Archie Gunn it was all the more special as he was only given a 10 per cent chance of survival when he was born.Archie was born at 25 weeks weighing just 2lbs and spent eight months in total in hospital before he was finally able to come home to parents Toni and Stuart.His life hung in the balance more than once and he needed six operations in the first six months of his life as his family was told he was “on borrowed time”.
But he has come on leaps and bounds and is a happy, healthy five-year-old who started school at Whitdale Primary earlier this year as his proud family looked on.His mum Toni spoke to the Courier about her “little fighter” to mark World Prematurity Awareness
