Greater Manchester’s top public health chief has warned the region only has a ‘small window’ in which to jab as many people as possible before the Omicron variant becomes the dominant strain here.
Kate Arden said the variant was proof ‘Covid has surprises for us’ even now, telling how health workers and volunteers face 16-hour shifts, seven days a week, in a bid to administer a million boosters before the New Year.
Prof Ardern, public health director in Wigan and lead for Greater Manchester, said the combination of the variant’s transmissibility, the time of year and its ability to evade natural immunity were all ringing alarm bells for her.
