Visual Effects Society Awards Preview: Apes, Sandworms and a Chimp Pop Star

Carolyn Giardina A trio of VFX Oscar nominees lead the feature competition nominations for the 23rd Visual Effects Society Awards, which will be handed out Feb.

11 at the Beverly Hilton. Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two” leads with seven nominations, followed by Wes Ball’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” with six nominations, and Michael Gracey’s Robbie Williams biopic “Better Man,” with four noms.

These movies will compete with “Mufasa: The Lion King” and “Twisters” in the top VES category for VFX in a photoreal feature.

Additional Oscar nominees “Alien: Romulus” and “Wicked” collected one VES nom apiece, in the categories for model (Renaissance Space Station) and environments (the Emerald City), respectively.
