As the colder weather continues to freeze the UK, there are still people who head out early every morning to walk their dog before work. While we wrap up cosy to head out into the cold, some people may not know that they also have to keep their pooches warm while going for a jaunt around the neighbourhood. There are actually certain temperatures where you should be putting a coat on your pup, and one expert has shared the exact degrees you should be on the lookout for.Veterinarian Dr.
Paola Cuevas partnered with clothing retailer Joules to reveal the benefits of keeping your furry friend wrapped up warm this winter, as well as safety advice for when it is not recommended.Dr Paola said: "When the environmental temperature is too cold dogs are at risk of developing hypothermia, so like humans, it is important that we use coats to preserve heat in their bodies during winter."A dog's natural coat serves much more than just their looks and there are many reasons to keep it in top shape."Dr Paola also explained that there are certain temperatures to look out for when your dog will require an extra layer.
The expert said: "As a general rule, when the temperature drops below 7C, you should keep an eye on your dog and consider a jacket if you go outside, especially if your dog is small or has a thin coat. "At 0C and below, most dogs will need a jacket.
And at -7C every dog runs the risk of hypothermia and should definitely be provided an insulating winter jacket and booties if they need to go outside."The expert said that factors like size and coat quality of the dog should be considered when deciding when dogs need a physical coat.
