The US military has scrambled three fighter jets to intercept a patrolling Russian warplane flying near to an American aircraft carrier.
The Russian IL-38 had managed to get within 30km of the USS George Washington aircraft carrier without being detected. Footage taken by the aircraft shows it being escorted by a US jet as it passes the ship.
As the US aircraft carrier comes into view, dozens of fighter jets can be seen lining up at the deck. The IL-38 "Dolphin" aircraft is a long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft used to hunt for American submarines.
A total of three US fighter jets, including two supersonic F/A-18 Hornet fighters and one F-15 tactical fighter, were deployed to ward off the jet.
