Votes are now being counted across the United States as the nation decides on the next president. Millions of Americans cast their vote on Tuesday and the process of working out whether Donald Trump or Kamala Harris has won is now underway.
The winner of the US election will be the candidate with a majority of the electoral college votes, as opposed to the highest number of votes by members of the public. For each state the candidate with the majority of votes wins all of the electoral votes allocated to that state. For example whoever wins the most votes in California will win all 54 electoral votes.
There are 538 electoral college votes in total and to win the presidency a candidate must gain a majority of these votes (270 or more).
