Ultra-realistic cake design sees Ayr care home chef transform beloved fish supper

An incredible hyper-realistic fish and chips cake design has seen its Ayr care home chef creator crowned ‘supper’ star baker in a Scotland-wide competition.Talented Emma Ferrante, head chef at Ayr’s Greenan Manor Care Home, came out on top of 30 entries to be hailed the winner of the 2022 Meallmore Bake Off competition for her fish supper made entirely out of cake.Emma fought off stiff competition at the annual contest, which was open to Meallmore’s 26 care homes across Scotland.Inspired by living near the South Ayrshire coast and the popularity of ‘fish Friday’ amongst the residents at the home, Emma put her baking skills to the test to wow the judges with her creation.The illusion cake design took approximately six hours to complete.The Ayrshire Live app is available to download now.Get all the local news in your area – plus features, football news and the latest on the coronavirus crisis – at your fingertips 24/7.The free download features the latest breaking news and exclusive stories while you can customise your page with the sections that matter to you.The Ayrshire Live app is available to download now on iOS and Android.It consisted of a lemon and vanilla sponge topped with a layer of raspberry jam, vanilla buttercream and fried in a sweet batter to create the ‘fish’ — with staff commenting it tasted of a freshly cooked doughnut.The cake was accompanied by lemon shortbread ‘chips’, fondant for both the ‘peas’ and ‘lemon wedge’, and finally, a mixture of double cream, lemon and pistachios to make the ‘tartar sauce’.Emma said she is “completely ecstatic” to scoop the winning spot and added: “I couldn’t have hoped for a better result, and I’d like to thank staff and residents at Greenan Manor for their kind words of
