UK tourists warned as Canary Islands’ government raises alert level to 'maximum'

The Canary Islands government has raised the alert level to ‘maximum’ as emergency services recorded more than 300 incidents due to strong winds in the western islands over the weekned.

People are warned to ‘not let their guard down’ as Tenerife, El Hierro and La Gomera are battered by winds reaching 100km/h.

Amber weather alerts have been issued by Aemet, Spain’s national weather agency for Tenerife, El Hierro and La Gomera with ‘hurricane force gusts’ of over 120km/h ‘not ruled out’.

The other Canary Islands, which includes Gran Canaria and Lanzarote are covered by yellow alerts for wind, warning of gusts of up to 70km/h.
