UK temperatures could hit lowest in 16 years as country hit by icy blast

Temperatures are set to plunge as low as minus 15C, the coldest recorded of the winter so far, as the UK braces for an icy blast.

Parts of England are still subject to ice and snow warnings today and experts at the Met Office said further alerts are likely in the next few days.

Northern Scotland and Northern Ireland are under a yellow warning for snow and ice from noon today until midnight on Thursday as sleet and snow showers sweep the regions.

Lows of minus 15C are possible in Scotland and northern England overnight on Thursday and sub-zero temperatures are expected across the country.
