Having ADHD could reduce your life expectancy by up to nine years, scientists warn. New research has found that women with ADHD could die nine years sooner, while for men the condition could take seven years off their life.
ADHD, short for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, is a condition that affects people’s behaviour and concentration, affecting 1.9 million adults in the UK.
Researchers at University College London looked at data from 2000 to 2019 from more than nine million adults across the UK to determine whether ADHD is linked to a shorter life.
Women with ADHD had an average life expectancy of around 75 years, compared with 84 years in those without the disorder. Similarly, men with ADHD lived for an average of 73 years, but men without it lived for around 80 years.
