The UK heatwave has cancelled Edinburgh trains to London today, causing travel chaos for Scots commuters. No trains will run beyond York, with train operators issuing stark guidance on the running of services from the capital due to the scorching temperatures.

All services from Edinburgh Waverley to London Kings Cross have been suspended from 11.30am onwards. Trains bound for London Euston are still running but the only two services that aren't yet sold out are subject to major disruption.

Journey times for passengers is expected to last over five hours, according to The Train Line website. No trains are running on the East Coast Mainline between York and London after midday either.London North Eastern Railway (LNER) confirmed the reason for the cancellations is down to the extreme weather conditions, while Network Rail warned passengers to only travel if absolutely necessary.Travellers are being advised to check their journey before they set off as speed restrictions will also be introduced on railway lines across the country to ensure the safe running of trains.The upset comes amid reports Scotland could face record temperatures today as the country continues to be hit by a heatwave.

An amber weather warning for extreme heat is in place until midnight on Wednesday for eastern, southern and central parts of Scotland.
