Britain could be at risk of a Beirut-style explosion, it is feared, as a port prepares to store almost twice as much ammonium nitrate as went off in the Lebanese capital.
It is not yet certain if the tragedy which killed at least 154 people on Tuesday was an accident or terrorism. Lebanon’s President Michel Aoun said: “There is a possibility of a rocket or bomb or other act.’“ The blast, which flattened much of Beirut’s port, was caused when a fire set off a 3,000-ton pile of ammonium nitrate in a warehouse.
But shipping company Portico wants permission to store up to 4,999 tons in Portsmouth, Hants. The firm insists the plan is safe.
