New analysis has revealed that the UK's daily coronavirus death toll topped 1,000 for 22 days in a row at the pandemic's height.
The staggering figures also show that nearly 1,500 people died in one day at the peak. The numbers, which include deaths in hospitals, care homes, and private homes, are much higher than the tolls announced at No 10's daily briefings at the time, according to analysis by the Guardian.
Official figures now show that on April 8, a record 1,445 people lost their lives to Covid-19 in the space of just 24 hours.
However, the highest reported daily death toll announced at a government briefing was 980. In a period totalling just over three weeks between April 2 and 23, 26,566 people lost their lives to coronavirus.
