The number of people who have died in UK hospitals after contracting coronavirus now stands at 19,506. The death toll has increased by 768 from 18,738 at the same point yesterday, according to the latest update from the Department of Health.
The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus has risen by 5,386 to 143,464 from 138,078 at the same point yesterday. A total of 444,222 people have now been tested, with 28,532 tests taking place yesterday (April 23).
The latest figures come as testing capacity increases to over 50,000 which the government says is "ahead" of its plans to reach 100,000 tests a day by the end of the month.
