UK coronavirus deaths pass 100,000 as pandemic toll reaches grim milestone

More than 100,000 deaths involving coronavirus have occurred in the UK since the beginning of the pandemic, official data shows.

The Government said a further 1,564 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Wednesday - the highest number of UK deaths reported on a single day since the outbreak began.

The previous highest daily toll was on Friday, when 1,325 were reported to have died. The Government also said that, as of 9am on Wednesday, there had been a further 47,525 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK It brings the total number of cases in the UK to 3,211,576.
