A young Bono from U2 unwittingly changed the sound to the iconic song Love Will Tear Us Apart. The Joy Division anthem, regularly voted one of the greatest songs of all time, was being made in a London studio with producer Martin Hannett in March 1980, and Bono and the rest of Irish band U2 went to meet him with the prospect of making an album together.
The recording sessions were dogged by problems as Hannett struggled to capture the essence of the song's popularity with fans when played live.
Joy Division drummer Stephen Morris said: “I remember during torturous ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart' drummerthon, mark three, that the doorbell went at Britannia Row. “A bunch of very young Irish boys turned up, who announced themselves at the band U2. “
