While U2‘s series of shows at The Sphere in Las Vegas has thusfar been notable for the brilliant display of technology that the building allows, the band this weekend took a beat to remind those in attendance of the power of music — and human connection.
With the screen around him black, Bono mentioned the violence over the weekend in the Middle East, focusing specifically on the hundreds of kids who were killed or kidnapped at the Nova music festival in the desert, calling them “our kind of people, music people.
Playful.” He continued: “In the light of what’s happened in Israel and Gaza, a song about non-violence seems somewhat ridiculous, even laughable, but our prayers have always been for peace and for non-violence… But our hearts and our anger, you know where that’s pointed.
So sing with us… and those beautiful kids at that music festival…” Guitarist the Edge then softly moved into the opening strains of the band’s soaring song about the life and death of Martin Luther King, “Pride: In the Name of Love.” The audience was right there with them, singing the backing vocals before Bono began the opening lines.
