A man has been slapped with a fine and a community order after attempting to burgle a popular south Manchester pub. Anthony Woods and another man were spotted by security staff of The Christie hospital breaking a window and entering the Red Lion pub on Wilmslow Road, Withington, on January 10 last year.

Police arrived and spotted two men on the roof of the pub, which was under refurbishment at the time, who tried to make an escape along Wilmslow Road.

Dogs were deployed and they were arrested nearby, Stockport Magistrates Court heard. It was found that the back doors of the pub had been forced open with the hinges taken off with 36-year-old Woods found with tools in his pocket when he was arrested. The court heard that the co-defendant in that case pleaded guilty earlier and received a community order. In mitigation, a representative from solicitors Draycott Browne LTD, said that Woods had 'stayed out of trouble' since 2016 and that he had pleaded guilty at the start of the trial.
